Beat The Devil - Movie Review |
|
Director John Huston and actor Humphrey Bogart, who had previously collaborated on classics ranging from The Maltese Falcon to The African Queen, teamed up for the last time on Beat the Devil, the least known and most unfairly underrated of their five joint efforts. Humphrey Bogart stars as one of five disreputable adventurers who are trying to get uranium out of East Africa. Huston tore up the original screenplay on the first day of filming and flew the young Truman Capote to Ravallo, the final script was written on a day-to-day basis as the film was being shot. The story concerns the adventures of a motley crew of swindlers and ne'er-do-wells trying to lay claim to land rich in uranium deposits in Kenya as they wait in a small Italian port or travel aboard an ill-fated tramp steamer en route to Mombasa.

Beat The Devil Trivia - Did You Know?Humphrey Bogart was involved in a serious automobile accident during production which knocked out several of his teeth and hindered his ability to speak. John Huston hired a young British actor noted for his mimicry skills to rerecord some of Bogart's spoken lines during post-production looping. And although it is nearly undetectable when viewing the film today, it is reportedly Peter Sellers who provides Humphrey Bogart's voice during some scenes of this movie.
