A convicted thief in Dartmoor prison hides the location of the stolen Bank of England printing plates inside three music boxes. When the innocent purchasers of the boxes start to be murdered, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) investigate. Three identical cheap musical boxes (each one playing a subtly different version of "The Swagman"), manufactured by an inmate in Dartmoor Prison, are sold at a local auction house to three random collectors. However, a criminal gang led by a female antagonist (Patricia Morison) and her accomplices are determined to steal and recover the musical boxes using all means possible, even if it means committing murder.
