American Empire - Movie Review

Originally slated for release through Paramount Pictures but ultimately distributed by United Artists, American Empire is a western special from Hopalong Cassidy producer Harry Pop Sherman. Set during the Reconstruction period, the film stars Richard Dix and Preston S. Foster as Dan Taylor and Paxton Bryce, two gallant Civil War heroes join forces to build a cattle empire in Texas, and battle rustlers, bad weather and each other.

Looking for adventure and fortune, Paxton Bryce (Preston Foster) convinces his friend and partner, Dan Taylor (Richard Dix), to give up their ferry business and go into cattle rearing and are hired to move a herd of cattle but are cheated out of their rightful pay by the disingenuous owner, played by Leo Carrillo.

They encounter cattle thief Dominique Beauchard (Leo Carrillo) and they take the cattle for themselves and move out west to establish their own ranch, taking with them Dans sister Abby, who later marries Paxton. Together, they establish themselves, but Paxton becomes restless and tries to rise to greater power, but Paxton's greed and refusal to cooperate with his neighbors costs him his son, his wife and his long-time friend.

After more trials and conflicts, some with Carrillos character again, the three are reunited and continue living harmoniously in their “American empire.”

American Empire Trivia - Did You Know?

University of Berkeley graduate William H. McGann entered the film industry as an assistant cameraman after serving in much the same capacity during World War I. McGann was promoted to director of photography by Douglas Fairbanks; he lensed such popular Fairbanks vehicles as When the Clouds Roll By (1919) and The Mark of Zorro (1920), then briefly worked for Buster Keaton on The Three Ages (1923). He began his directorial career in 1930, helming Spanish-language versions of American films. After a short stay in England, he returned to Hollywood, where he became a stalwart of Warner Bros. B-picture unit.
