Zontar The Thing From Venus - Movie Review

In this extremely low-budget remake of Roger Corman's It Conquered The World - a well-meaning scientist (John Agar) aids a stranded alien and soon discovers the visitor's nefarious plans for world. The film perfectly exemplified Texan sci-fi/horror master Larry Buchanan's ability to create complicated stories out of nearly non-existent budgets.

Dr. Curt Taylor (John Agar) meets an alien from Venus, who claims to have come to the earth to solve its problems. But Zontar has different ideas. Zontar, a hilariously unconvincing batlike creature, hides out in a cave and sends out "funny little birds" to implant control devices on hapless humans, all as part of the master plan to take over the Earth. He begins causing worldwide blackouts and controlling people's minds. Taylor now knows that Zontar is seeking world domination. The power failures Zontar causes make cars stall. It's up to Keiths' stoic colleague Curt Taylor (John Agar) to save the day.

This movie is quintessential ‘Fifties Cold War paranoia: sci-fi movies in the 1950’s were filled with egghead scientist types who tried being friendly with aliens instead of just wanting to blow them out of the sky, not realizing that the aliens were usually invaders hell bent on destruction. This being a metaphor for the cliched intellectual type who falls for an ideology like Communism, believing that it will benefit humanity, while it is actually mere a tyrannical dictatorship.

Zontar The Thing From Venus Trivia - Did You Know?

This remake of Roger Corman's low budget It Conquered the World (1956) was one of a series of films shot in 16mm and color and was used to pad out one of American International's television syndication packages. Popular lore has it that Buchanan was the only director ever who physically edited his films using duct tape.
