Phantom Of Chinatown - Movie Review

In the sixth and final installment of the Mr. Wong series, Keye Luke assumes Boris Karloff's former role as Detective James Lee Wong. When the only man who understands the mystery behind the ancient Chinese secret of "Eternal Fire" is murdered, the San Francisco police must join forces with amateur detective Jimmy Wong to track down the killer and avert disaster.

In the middle of a pictorial lecture on his recent expedition to the Mongolian Desert, Dr. John Benton (Charles Miller) the famous explorer, drinks from the water bottle on his lecture table, collapses and dies. His last words "Eternal Fire" are the only clue Chinese detective Jimmy Wong (Keye Luke) and Captain Street (Grant Withers) of the police department have to work on. Win Len (Lotus Long), Benton's secretary, reveals the doctor's dying words refer to a scroll which tells the location of rich oil deposits. Wong and Street then begin the search for the killer among Benton's associates.

Despite its low-budget pulp fiction origins, this whodunit is a milestone of sorts as the first Hollywood film to star Asians since the early silent days of Sessue Hayakawa and Tsuru Aoki. Not that Keye Luke and Lotus Long are in their class exactly but they remain the genuine article, no fake-looking "Oriental" spirit gum makeup necessary. Luke's Jimmy Lee Wong's relationship to that eminent detective Mr. James Lee Wong, whom Karloff had played in the previous five films, is merely hinted at here when faithful retainer Lee Tung Foo alludes to the young man's absent "father."

Phantom Of Chinatown Trivia - Did You Know?

Keye Luke made his film debut in The Painted Veil in 1934, and the following year gained his first big role, as Charlie Chan's eldest son in Charlie Chan in Paris. He worked so well with Warner Oland, the actor playing Chan, that "Number One Son" became a regular character in the series, alternately helping and distracting "Pop" Chan in each of his murder cases. Unlike some performers who failed to establish themselves beyond a single role, Keye Luke continued to work prolifically in Hollywood, at studios both large and small. Keye Luke, who described himself as a "Cantonese Ham", went on to star in 120 films before his death in 1991.
