Fluent Dysphasia - Movie Review

Another award winning film from the maker of Yu Ming is Ainm Dom. Interview with the Vampire and Crying Game star, Stephen Rea, plays a single father who is more interested in a night out with the lads than communicating with his only daughter, but everything changes after a drunken binge.

A man wakes up the morning after a heavy night out in the pub with his friend, to discover that he can speak perfect Irish Gaelic, something he certainly was previously unable to do, and in addition that he has totally lost the ability to speak in English. This bizarre situation leads to sincere, if unconventional, communication between the man and his daughter.

When his friend arrives he is horrified by the situation, thinking that his friend must be possessed, but after some investigation his daughter discovers that this bizarre change in her father might have been the result of a knock he received to this head during the drunken celebrations of the night out. The solution they decide is to hit him again with a frying pan and try to restore his ability to speak English. But will it?

Fluent Dysphasia received funding from the Oscailt programme operated by the Irish Film Board and TG4 and it was shot on HD Cam, the short film stars Academy Award Nominated actor Stephen Rea as the Father.

Director Daniel O'Hara has received an Irish Film & Television Academy nomination in the category of Breakthrough Talent for the short, The short has been screened at several prestigious international film festivals, which included London's Raindance, World Short Film Festival in Toronto and the San Jose, Cinequest Festival.
