Great Guy - Movie Review |
|
After retiring from a boxing career, Johnny Cave (James Cagney) accepts an appointment to serve as head of the New York Department of Weights and Measures. However, he soon discovers that the organization is full of corruption. There is a systematic effort to cheat the public by giving them less product than they pay for...organized by crooked city alderman Marty Cavanaugh, who put the last chief deputy inspector in the hospital. Cagney sets out to uncover the scam, much to the dismay of his girlfriend, Janet (Mae Clarke), and his underhanded co-workers. Great Guy brought to the screen the reality of widespread corruption in the 1930's during FDR's New Deals. The film does a good job of shedding light on that intriguing era and uncovers various plots and schemes that go all the way up to highest offices.

Great Guy Trivia - Did You Know?According to James Cagney's autobiography "Cagney By Cagney", (Published by Doubleday and Company Inc 1976, and actually ghost written by show biz biographer Jack McCabe), A Mafia plan to murder Cagney by dropping a several hundred pound klieg light on top of him was stopped at the insistence of George Raft. Cagney at that time was President of the Screen Actors Guild, and was determined not to let the mob infiltrate the industry. Raft used his 'many' mob connections to cancel the hit.
